Very informative and practical lesson for me, as I have been working on this song for a few weeks since our band picked it up as a cover tune. Although, I would like to say that it makes more sense to me for the left hand to do the busy work on the rim section, and the right hand to stay steady on the quarter notes, since the left hand will be busy on the snare as well, and the right hand will be staying steady on the quarter notes later in the song on the ride cymbal. I’ve modified my routine to include that. What do you think?

When the crash hits at the end, isn’t that the downbeat when the actual groove starts? Doesn’t that mean the opening bar cuts of the last 8th note or that the first snare flam actually hits on the “and” of 1? Thanks for any help on understanding this.
